A Prayer For My Husband Day 9

If you have made it this far, congratulations! We are now in week 2. This is your friendly reminder that the enemy does NOT like what you are doing. A united husband and wife working for the kingdom of God in any capacity (yes, even to raise children!) is a huge threat.

In case you are new here, below you will find:

  1. Scripture - this is the Scripture assigned for the day

  2. Meditating on the Word section

  3. Digging Deeper section with some reflection (optional)

  4. A Prayer for our husbands: one for those whose husbands proclaim Christ and one for those whose husbands do not

  5. A Challenge to help you with your marriage and prayer life in some manner.

Nurturing the Will of God in Our Husband

Paul instructs the believers in Ephesus in Ephesians 5:17 telling them that they should not be unwise, but instead understand what the will of God is. As women who are married, what is God's will for us?

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Ephesians 5:22-24

The principle of submission that was first established in verse 21 means submitting to others as established by God. Our actions should ALWAYS points back to God and HIS redemptive plan. In God’s design, wives voluntarily submit to their husbands. In God’s design of marriage, the husband is (ideally) submitting to the authority of Christ.

In this way, a Christian marriage is designed for the man and woman to thrive as a reflection of Christ and the church.

What if your husband is NOT a Christian or he is not submitting to Christ? I get this question a lot. Will your husband say the wrong things or get off track spiritually by falling into sin? Yes he most certainly will, and so will we as wives. If you don’t want your husband to walk away from you when you make a mistake or get off track spiritually, don’t walk away from your husband when he makes a mistake or gets off track spiritually. It goes both ways. Forgiveness and grace play a HUGE role in a Godly marriage. We are to do everything for God’s glory regardless of what our husbands do. I do want to give a disclaimer here. Abuse is never ok. A Christian man will never abuse his wife. If you are in an abusive situation, this does not apply to you.

Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.
1 Peter 3:1-2

Whether a man has fallen into sin or is not saved, the Word of God states that a man may be won by his wife’s respectful and pure conduct. I have seen this happen. God is still in the miracle working business!

Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
Proverbs 31:30

Ladies, if you want to help your husband live out the will of God, you have to walk in God's will too. Colossians 1:9 says to walk in a manner worthy to the Lord. It is worth pausing and asking yourself: Is your walk pleasing to God?

Meditating on the Word

Think about the Scriptures today. Ask the Lord to help you identify whether you are walking in a manner that bears fruit pleasing to Him. Write these verses on an index card if this will help to remind you or set an alarm on your phone to reflect and pray on these things throughout the day.

Digging Deeper

If you are inclined to dig deeper, here are some application questions.

  1. Based on Paul's prayers in verses 9-12, what attributes should be included in our prayers for ourselves and our husbands?

  2. Can you think of a time lately when you have done something out of spite towards your husband? Do you think this was pleasing to God? Will this push him towards God or away from God?

  3. Ask your husband if there is anything he has felt you have been unloving or condemning towards him about. Don’t get defensive when he answers if you choose to do this.

Prayer for My Husband Today

(For those whose husbands proclaim Christ)

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for blessing me with my husband and the growth that we have endured together. I pray that You nurture the seed planted in both of us to grow in Your will. Lord, I ask that You give me the strength to nurture my husband in the way he needs and my children in the way that they need. Help me to bear good fruit and walk in a manner pleasing to You, Father. Thank You for Your continued grace, love, mercy, and the inheritance we have in You.

In Your heavenly name I pray, amen.

(For those whose husbands are not in Christ)

Dear Heavenly Father,

Father, I ask that You help me continue to grow in Your knowledge and will so that my husband may come to know you as Lord. Help me to bear good fruit and walk in a manner pleasing to You, Father. Thank You and I love You.

In Your heavenly name I pray, amen.

Challenge

Ask your husband to pray with you today, whether together or separately. I want to encourage you to ask him at some point. It is important that your husband knows you are praying for him. It really helps your husband to see the words that you are praying for him. (Firsthand experience!)
