  1. Scripture - this is the Scripture assigned for the day

  2. Meditating on the Word section

  3. Digging Deeper section with some reflection (optional)

  4. A Prayer for our husbands: one for those whose husbands proclaims Christ and one for those whose husbands do not.

  5. A Challenge to help you with your marriage and prayer life in some manner.

Safety and Protection

"Luther, when in greatest distress, was wont to call for this psalm, saying, let us sing the forty-sixth psalm in concert; and then let the devil do his wort." (John Trapp)

While most psalms begin with a description of a current crisis, we see something different in Psalm 46. Psalm 46 begins with a proclamation of God as their refuge and strength. Here, refuge means a shelter from danger. God is a mighty shelter from danger for His people and a “present” help, or one that is always nearby. The psalmist was saying that the Lord is not some far away deity in which they must wonder if He will aid or hear their cries. Regardless of what is going on: earthquakes, floods, God will be there to protect His children.

The authors then say, “Selah” in verse three. It means pause here and think about this. Reflect on that. Regardless of the chaos that is going on around you, God will be your protection in danger. Don’t question it. KNOW it.

Meditating on the Word

Think about the Scriptures today. Thank God for being there for you at a time when you did not see it and realized it later. Write this verse on an index card if this will help to remind you or set an alarm on your phone to reflect and pray on these things throughout the day.

Digging Deeper

If you are inclined to dig deeper, here are some application questions based on the Scripture for today.

  1. How does the depiction of God as our refuge and strength in Psalm 46 provide you comfort?

  2. Thank of one way have you experienced God as an "ever-present help in trouble" when you did not see it then but did later. Write this down and keep it somewhere you can read when you need encouragement.

  3. In what ways can you encourage your husband to look to God for protection if He proclaims Christ? If he doesn't, how can you testify to him ways God has been there for you and him that he may not fully see right now?

Day 18 of 30: Prayer Challenge for Wives

Challenge

Ask your husband to pray with you today, whether together or separately. I want to encourage you to ask him at some point. It is important that your husband knows you are praying for him. It really helps your husband to see the words that you are praying for him. (Firsthand experience!)
