Godly Influence

We often start with good intentions in our walk. In the beginning of our walk with Christ, we are excited and fully surrendered to Him. Then, the new wears off. This was an issue Paul addressed in his letter to the Galatians. Paul says they started their "race" and ran well, then ran into the Judaizers, who Paul referred to as a "little leaven." Paul then goes on to say in Galatians 5:9 that a little leaven leavens the whole lump, but what does this mean?

Leaven in this context is "generally a symbol of the spreading nature of evil," and the lump is the dough which has particles spreading evil mixed in it. In the case of the Galatians, Paul was saying that the source of the evil being spread may be a very few people, but it would ruin the entire church.

According to Expositor's Greek Testament Commentary, "stringent precautions were adopted in Jewish households for the removal of every particle before the days of unleavened bread" because they were so worried about ONE particle ruining their dough. (This should be a grave warning for the current state of our church, but I digress.)

So, how does this principle apply to us today, and to our marriages, specifically? Be careful who you surround yourselves with or receive counsel from, especially for your marriage. It comes down to this. Do you want your husband being given counsel on how to run his home from ungodly men? Whether your husband is a Christian or not, you are here because you are a Christian. If you are praying for your husband to come to Christ, his company is important. Likewise, if he is in Christ already, your husband's company is important.

This applies to you as well. Does the company you receive counsel on push you towards Christ, or away from Christ? If your husband does not see YOU doing

this, why would he? Just a little thing to think about today!

Scripture

A prayer for my husband
Galatians 5:7-9

Meditating on the Word

Think about the Scriptures today. Ask the Lord to reveal to you any counsel you may be receiving that may be ungodly regarding your marriage, as well as company your husband sees YOU keep. Write this verse on an index card if this will help to remind you or set an alarm on your phone to reflect and pray on these things throughout the day.

Digging Deeper

If you are inclined to dig deeper, here are some application questions based on the Scripture for today.

  1. Have you been hindered by any false teachings in your walk? What can you do to prevent this in the future?

  2. Are you giving your ear to someone who may be giving you ungodly advice in your marriage? If so, how can you change this?

  3. How good are you at communicating your own wants and needs with your husband? How can you improve this?

Prayer for My Husband Today

(For those whose husbands proclaims Christ)

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for blessing me with my husband. Lord, today I pray that my husband is surrounded with Godly men who encourage him and teach him as he faces the rough industry that he works in.  Lord, I pray that he can conquer his day with Your strength, wisdom, and dignity. Lord, I lift my husband up to You and ask that You may conceal him under Your wing and keep him safe from any and all spiritual oppression or attacks.

Please keep him safe and bring him home to our family.

In Your heavenly name I pray, amen.

Prayer, Option #2

(For those whose husbands are not in Christ)

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for blessing me with my husband. Lord, today I pray that my husband is surrounded with Godly men who encourage him and teach him more about You as he faces the rough industry that he works in. Lord, I lift my husband up to You and ask that You may conceal him under Your wing and keep him safe from any and all spiritual oppression or attacks, especially since he is not in a relationship with You yet, Father. I ask that You help me seek wise counsel regarding my marriage.

Please keep him safe and bring him home to our family.

In Your heavenly name I pray, amen.

Challenge

Ask your husband to pray with you today, whether together or separately. I want to encourage you to ask him at some point. It is important that your husband knows you are praying for him. It really helps your husband to see the words that you are praying for him. (Firsthand experience!)
