A Prayer for My Husband Day 16

Does your marriage demonstrate God to your children? I know mine did not for many years. This is what we are talking about today.

In case you are new here, below you will find:

  1. Scripture - this is the Scripture assigned for the day

  2. Meditating on the Word section

  3. Digging Deeper section with some reflection (optional)

  4. A Prayer for our husbands: one for those whose husbands proclaims Christ and one for those whose husbands do not.

  5. A Challenge to help you with your marriage and prayer life in some manner.

Parenting

As Christian parents, we hear a lot about Proverbs 22:6,

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

This is a fantastic verse! However, let me take you to another section of Scripture you may not have heard of for this. Have you ever heard of the Shema? According to Got Questions, Shema (“hear”) is the Hebrew word that begins the most important prayer in Judaism. It is found in Deuteronomy 6:4, which begins with the command to “Hear.” The Shema prayer, which includes verses 4-9, is spoken twice daily in the Jewish tradition. Later, Jewish tradition developed a three-part Shema prayer that also included Deuteronomy 11:13-29 and Numbers 15:37-41. Tradition states these three parts cover all aspects of the Ten Commandments. You can read more on that here.

Immediately after being given the commandment to love God, with heart, soul, and might (strength), the Jews are told then to communicate these things to their children. What does this look like in application for us as parents now?

  1. Our actions should demonstrate to our children that we love God with our heart, soul, and strength. This includes studying the Word with them and teaching them how to.

  2. We should make as many moments as we can with our children teachable moments about the Lord.

  3. Pray with them, for them, and teach them to pray for others.

Obviously, this is not an exhaustive list, but it is a good start. Remember, your home is your first ministry.

How about in our marriage? How does this apply? Our children learn how to treat others from our actions. As mothers, we teach our sons how to treat women. We teach our daughters what to look for in a Godly husband. We demonstrate how Godly women behave and treat their family.

This final point I cannot stress enough. Our children watch us. We show them what type of behavior is ok in a marriage. If they see us being abused, they will think it is ok. If you are in an abusive situation, please get help.

Training up a child in the ways of God is about much more than teaching the Word of God to them. It is about showing them how to live it as well so that they will be brought to the knowledge of saving in Christ. IIt is about equipping them to do the work of God and spreading the Great Commission. Our actions should show that we know who God is and why He is such an amazing Father. He is a good, good Father, even when we fail as a parent. 💕

Scripture

Proverbs 22:6

Meditating on the Word

Think about the Scripture today. Ask the Lord to help you identify ways you can have more teachable moments with them regarding Him. Write this verse on an index card if this will help to remind you or set an alarm on your phone to reflect and pray on these things throughout the day.

Digging Deeper

If you are inclined to dig deeper, here are some application questions based on the Scripture for today.

  1. Do your actions demonstrate that you love God with your heart, soul, and strength? Why or why not?

  2. How are you modeling a Godly marriage to your children, even if your husband does not? (We can only control our actions!)

  3. Think of the last time you had to discipline your children for something. How could you have incorporated God in a manner that would share the love of Christ?

  4. Are you making your husband and children your first ministry?

Prayer for My Husband Today

(For those whose husbands proclaims Christ)

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for blessing me with a husband who is willing to be a parent with me. Lord, today I want to lift my husband up to You and ask that You help continuously guide him and myself as we navigate the waters of being a parent. Please teach us to have compassion, patience, kind, loving words, and understanding for our children that we are trying to raise up for Your glory. Help us teach our children to be Christians who walk in your light and demonstrate Your loving kindness to them. Lord, I ask for You to help us be the best parents that we can possibly be. Thank You and I love You.

In Your heavenly name I pray, amen.

Challenge

Ask your husband to pray with you today, whether together or separately. I want to encourage you to ask him at some point. It is important that your husband knows you are praying for him. It really helps your husband to see the words that you are praying for him. (Firsthand experience!)
