Choosing Joy in the Midst of Trials

Recently, someone asked me, “How do I experience the joy of the Lord?” My immediate response was simple: keep walking in His will, and joy will come. That has certainly been true in my life. But what about those seasons when life is unbearably hard? Right now, I’m walking through one of the most difficult trials I’ve ever faced—the loss of companionship with my best friend and husband in ways I never anticipated. He has been my rock, and this season feels overwhelming.
In studying Philippians, I’ve discovered a profound truth about joy that is applicable in this dark time. Paul repeatedly commands believers to rejoice. Let’s look at one verse:

The word rejoice here is a present-active-imperative verb. Let’s break that down:
• Present: It’s happening right now, in the moment.
• Active: The subject is performing the action himself
• Imperative: It’s a command—a choice he must make intentionally.
So when Paul tells the believers to rejoice, he’s not suggesting it or saying it will happen naturally; he’s commanding them to actively choose joy themselves. This theme runs throughout Philippians as Paul links joy to obedience and intentionality.
For example:
• In Philippians 2:29, believers are commanded to receive Epaphroditus with joy—again, a choice tied to obedience.
• In Philippians 1:4, Paul speaks of offering prayer with joy—a deliberate action rooted in faith.
• In Philippians 2:2, joy comes from unity in Christ, sharing His love, and being focused on the Gospel together as a body of believers.
Paul gives further instruction in Philippians 2:3-5 about adopting the attitude of Christ:
1. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit.
2. Walk in humility, considering others above yourself.
3. Be obedient to God’s will just as Christ was obedient unto death.
These verses remind us that joy isn’t dependent on circumstances; it’s an active choice rooted in obedience to God and a heart aligned with Christ’s humility and purpose.
So how do we experience joy even when life feels unbearable? We choose it—just like we choose love or forgiveness—by obeying God and trusting Him fully in every moment. Joy isn’t passive; it’s a decision we make every day to rejoice in Him despite trials and pain.
This morning, as you wake up and face whatever challenges lie ahead, ask yourself: What will I choose today? Will you choose selfishness or humility? Fear or faith? Will you choose joy?
Let us take Paul’s example and actively rejoice in the Lord—because He is faithful, His Gospel is advancing, and His love never fails!
